South Carolina Association of School Librarians: South Carolina Book Award Nominees
Every year South Carolina's Association of School Librarians select a variety of books to encourage reading. Check out the complete list of nominees for new reading selections. Students are also asked to read the picture books and the children's books and vote on them at the end of the school year.
Library Information
The library receives students Monday - Friday from 8:00 - 2:00. The library is on a fixed schedule this year. Students are able to visit the library during their weekly class time or between 1:25 - 200 daily to exchange books. Students are able to check out four books at a time. Students need to remember to renew their books weekly if they are still reading them. Overdue notices will be sent home periodically, please check your child's folder for notices. Students will be using the Accelerated Reader program this year. Click here for a Parent's Guide to this reading program.
There will be two book fairs per school year. One in the fall and one in the spring. Please look for information about these events in your child's weekly folders for dates and times.
New books are available for checkout. We are always adding to the collection. If you or your child has a book or series they would love to see added, please add your suggestion(s) to the *form and we will see if they are available and can be added to the school library.
We also have a growing section of Spanish books available to our students and their families that read and speak Spanish. Please ask your child to share their readings with you.
*Can only be viewed by F1S users.

Mrs. Toni Allen
Hello, my name is Toni Allen. I have worked in Florence One Schools since 2003. I have taught fifth and sixth grades, science and social studies, was the science coach for three years and in the computer lab for seven years. I began my career as Greenwood's librarian in 2018-2019.
I grew up in a small town called Hartsville and have always wanted to be an educator. It wasn’t until I was a science coach and positioned in an office in our school’s media center that I wanted to be a librarian. I assisted our librarian in more of an assistant role than doing the duties of a librarian. I enjoyed helping students find books to read and aid in their learning. Even in the computer lab, I had students do book podcast, write short stories and create a book trailer based on a book they have read.
I am also a wife and mother. Our children are in school and keep me busy at all times. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year and working with the best students and staff Florence One has.
Mrs. Cherie Turner
Hello my name is Cherie Turner and I am the librarian assistant here at Greenwood elementary. I have enjoyed working for Florence One for over 10 years. I attended South Florence High school and Florence Darlington Tech. I am blessed with an incredible husband of 20 years, 2 amazing children and one granddaughter. Some of my hobbies include camping, boating, fishing, and snow skiing. I am looking forward to an exciting school year filled with the “ 3 E’S “ educational, exciting, and engaging.
Vision Statement
A librarian is a key member of the school community. “Qualified school librarians perform interlinked, interdisciplinary, and cross-cutting roles as instructional leaders, program administrators, educators, collaborative partners, and information specialists” (pg 12).
As a librarian, I will fulfill my duties as a leader, instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, and program administrator. I will make it my duty to empower the students at my school to master the domain competencies, to use the correct tools and to be able to access the correct resources when needed by using the fundamental elements of think, create, share and grow. I will also self-reflect on all I do to assist teachers and students to make each experience better than the previous. (pg. 15)
As a leader, I will take the initiative to lead my school in professional developments. Seek out the skills being covered by teachers and collaborate with them. Sit in on team meetings when able to seek out the materials needed to aid the teachers with teaching their curriculum.
As a teacher, I will provide students lessons on how to complete research and use materials found correctly. As the librarian, it is my responsibility to make sure the students are being a good digital citizen and know how to discern information found is valid and from credible sites.
I believe all students can learn, but learn at different paces and styles. Students need to be taught at their level and need to have a variety of materials available to them to aid in their learning. As a teacher librarian, it is my responsibility to get to know the students and to be able to assist them when they come into the library looking for books.
Education is an ever evolving door and the teacher librarian is no different. Empowering students, teachers and the surrounding community is my mission. Without the library being at the forefront of the educational bridge, teachers and students would have very few resources to rely upon in their educational learning and experience.
Vision Statement
The vision for the Greenwood Elementary School library is to have a welcoming atmosphere in which students, teachers and the surrounding community pursues their interests and the world around them through reading and research, have a love for reading and lifelong learning, having the most up-to-date information and technology to be able to use with the standards within the classroom and to be able to discern between valid and invalid information.
